"Oh, well what's your role there?"
The discomfort completely disappated at Lucille's enthusiasm. She spoke with genuine joy in her voice. If she had something beneath it, he would have noted that it was a sign she was hiding something. But no, she sounded happy talking about her and her friend becoming members of the seemingly growing circus.
As he looked at her green eyes lighting up, he was reminded of Ellie. She was so exubarent when she talked about magic. Lucille could have easily been her incarnate...nah, that was too far of a stretch.

Lucille was a member of the circus too? That made Saorise very happy. Now, she could hang out with her whenever she wanted. She was curious as to what her job was. Maybe she was a model and she would end up on posters promoting the circus. She looked pretty enough for it.

Lucille gave a small laugh, a light thing that merely showed her genuine happiness at discovering that she would be able to see Carl and Saorise again.
"Oh, well I'm a singer and dancer. I also dabble a bit in costume-making, although I'm not really certain yet what Facilier wants me to do. I mean, I haven't had the chance to perform yet so I suppose it will depend on how my performance goes."
She felt a slight frown come across her face as she realized she hadn't yet had a good chance to practice her routine with Manolo. After all, they were a duo and the success of the performance depended as much on him as it did on her. She would have to find him and discuss their plans once she returned to the circus. However, she returned her attention to Carl and Saorise.
"I really do look forward to the chance of seeing you both around the circus. It would be a shame to have met and started to get to know you both only to have to part ways."

A singer and a dancer. The music act seemed to be growing every time Carl looked at the job list. He had noticed two new names placed on there, but whether or not one of them was Lucille was abject to his old memory. Something about costume making made him blink. The last costume designer he knew that she was reminding him of...could Lucille have known Sally? Who knew? It would be too much to ask at just the first meeting.
"Aye. It would have been disappointing," he agreed. "This is the closest to a bay we've been to in a while, and Saiorse wanted to get a closer look. But then here we are talking," he glanced down at the little girl. "You can go ahead and splash around, lass. I'll be staying here talking with Lucille."

Saorise hoped that she and Carl could see Lucille's act soon. She was sure it would be great. When Carl said she could go on ahead and swim for a bit, she smiled. It had been a while since she had swum in something beside a river. She waved at Lucille before running into the water. It was still cold, but it wasn't too bad. She pulled on the hood of her selkie and dived under the water as soon as it got deep enough. When she surfaced, she had already turned into a seal. She waved a fin in Carl and Lucille's direction.

Lucille watched Saorise run the short distance to the waves before beginning to swim out into the water. She felt some anxiety upon seeing the young girl dive beneath the waves but felt a stirring of amazement when a seal popped out of the water only a short distance from where she had disappeared. It had the same dark eyes and a coat as white as the one the child had been wearing. Therefore she could only assume that the seal was indeed Saorise.
"I seem to have stumbled upon a world of truly wondrous things."
She continued to watch the selkie a moment longer and gave a small wave before her attention focused back on Carl.
"Was there something else you wished to discuss away from Saorise?"
Lucille wasn't one to pry, but she had noticed how quickly Carl had sent the little girl away, close enough to be safe but far enough away to not hear them. The only reason she could think of for that was that he wished to ask her something more personal.

A white fin stuck out of the what. Good. That meant Saoirse was okay. The tiny little white fin disappeared, leaving Carl alone with Lucille. He looked at the flickering sunlight on the waves before turning to look at Lucille, asking why he wanted her away.
'Two reasons," he answered, "One is to be the good morai and let her swim so she could avoid being bored by us talking about old people things. The second was, well, to talk about the deceased." He scooped down to pick up a pebble, his bones cracking as he rose, and tossed it. It skipped several times before sinking. "I don't know how, but something about you reminds me of someone I lost..."

Saorise was oblivious to Carl and Lucille's conversation at the moment. She was just enjoying herself. She wondered if maybe she could find some seashells of her own. Maybe she and Lucille could start a collection together. She dove beneath the waves, intently hunting for some.

"Oh!.....oh."
Lucille felt the smallest bit of worry at Carl's words and dropped her gaze to the sand. What did you say to someone who said you reminded them of a loved one who had passed away? To tell him she was sorry for his loss seemed hollow and to say she knew how he felt would simply be insincere. After all, the only deaths she had ever faced were those of her parents and she doubted very much they compared to the death that Carl was speaking of. This sounded much....deeper, if Carl's tone and expression were anything to go by.
"I....I don't know what to say, Carl."
She knew her words offered little to the older man but she hoped that her tone conveyed her sympathy for him.

Well, given to what he had said, was there any other reaction to say? It was better than saying the woman was a dead fiancee; how creepy would that have sounded, especially to a woman over thirty years his younger. But at least Lucille chose to look at the situation with sympathy rather than creepiness.
"It's all right. You don't have to say anything," he held up a hand.

Saorise wasn't having much luck with finding seashells yet, but she wasn't about to give up. It did cross her mind that maybe it was easier to find them washed up on the shore, but where was the fun in that? Besides, she liked swimming around anyway. There weren't that many fish this close to the shore, but the few that were there seemed happy to see her. They seemed to know she was some odd mix of human and animal, but they didn't mind.

Lucille nodded at Carl's words but remained silent, her hands lightly held in front of her as the breeze suddenly picked up. She turned her head to look out at the sea once more, catching small glimpses of Saorise as she swam through the waves, beautiful and graceful as any full seal could ever hope to be.
"It leaves a hole that can never be filled.....doesn't it?"
Lucille said the words in a quiet voice, her face still turned out towards the ocean but the questioned posed only for Carl. Even though she had never lost someone as close to her heart as this person must have been to Carl's, she still felt the ache in her chest when she thought about her parents. And just imagining Manolo, her closest friend and companion, passing away was too painful to imagine for long. If that feeling was anything like what Carl felt, she hoped that her resemblance to the deceased wouldn't make that pain return.

"Aye," Carl sighed, watching the white shape of Saoirse rise up and down in the water. "So, you say you have a companion traveling with you in the cirque, he changed the topic. "Is this person a musician as well?"

Saorise figured she might as well check on Carl and Lucille. She had been underwater for a while. Once her head popped up above the surface, she could see that the two were still talking. It seemed like they were getting along, which made Saorise very happy.

Lucille realized that when Carl suddenly changed the topic, it might have been going to a point that was too difficult to talk about. Either way, she wasn't about to continuing talking about lost love if he didn't want to. When he instead inquired if her companion was also a musician, she nodded.
"Yes. He plays the guitar and has quite the talent with it. He also sings. I hope you'll get to see us both perform very soon."
