"Now, you be careful, lass. Just because we're in the ocean doesn't mean you can't be hurt." Carl leaned against his cane, feeling it sink into the sand as he lectured Saoirse about swimming. Salem was a coastal town, and that meant plenty of ocean water. Besides, getting close to the sea would do him some good for his bones. The selkie herself would get some good time swimming in something other than rivers and lakes. It was a win win. He ruffled the little girl's hair; in the following days he spent with her, he had begun to get attached.
"If you lose sight of me, remember the little motion we talked about." He made an upward motion with his hand before swinging it down. He figured she could easily mimic it with her seal tail, too. "I'll find ya."

Saorise hadn't been near the ocean in a long time, which was why she was super excited when the circus came to Salem. And even better, she could spend more time with Carl. Even though she had labeled the man as her grandfather upon first seeing him, she was starting to grow more fond of him the more she got to know him. He had his grouchy moments, but he was still nice and looked out for her. Saorise had missed that feeling of having someone care for her. She gave a half-distracted nod in Carl's direction as she ran towards the water, her selkie coat wrapped tightly around her. A wave washed over her feet, and although she shivered slightly, the water felt good to her. "Cold, cold, cold!" she said happily, giggling all the while. She was getting a little more confident talking around people, but Carl was still the person she talked to the most.

"L'océan... sa si belle!"
Lucille spoke the words quietly as her green eyes looked out over the endless expanse of sea that lay before her. She had been somewhat nervous about leaving the circus after arriving in Salem, mostly because she wasn't familiar with the area and was worried about getting lost. However, she had never been this close to the sea before, having lived her entire life in Paris, and the desire to see the shore at last drove any lingering concerns away.
Now she stood on the edge of the beach, wearing a light sundress of pale rose and her sandaled feet just beyond the reach of the tide. She took in a deep breath, the scent of salt water filling her chest, and smiled as she pushed a few loose strands of hair out of her face.
It truly was a beautiful thing to see. Suddenly, something near her feet caught her eye and she knelt down to look more closely at the damp sand. A small shell was sitting on the ground, just washed up from the last wave. Lucille smiled down at the shell before picking it up and holding it in her palm. A chance to collect seashells. What could be better?
She continued along the line of the beach, stopping and picking up shells where she found them and admiring the different types, textures and colors they all seemed to come in, completely unaware that she was drawing closer to a young girl and an older man.

Carl smiled wistfully at Saoirse's antics as she tiptoed through the water. Her selkie coat, a mterial that looked like a fancy mink shawl but really was something else entirely, complete with a pearly sheen, made her stand out from the fisherman in their fishing galoshes and other children in their swimsuits. A deep chuckle emerged with a playful headshake. "At least we aren't in the Arctic!" he called with a joke to her.

Saorise laughed back. The Artic would be pretty cold compared to this. She knew a lot of seals lived there, but she wasn't so sure about selkies. They tended to live in places that were hospitable for both humans and seals. She ran in and out of the water, not going in too far because of the cold. But somebody soon caught her attention. It was a woman, picking up seashells. Her hair was red, and she was very lovely. She looked like those ladies Saorise saw in magazines sometimes, when they were showing off make-up or some new clothes. Saorise grabbed Carl's hand and pointed at the woman. "Pretty," she said.

Lucille had collected several different kinds of seashells by that point when she spotted yet another kind with a swirling shape and orangish in coloration. She was just reaching for the shell when two shadows appeared on the sand in front of her and she heard someone speak.
She looked up from where she knelt in the surf and saw a little girl with pale skin, black hair, and lovely dark eyes pointing at her while she held the hand of an older man with glasses and a somewhat grumpy face. Perhaps this man was a grandfather taking his granddaughter out for a day at the beach.
"Oh, hello there."
Lucille smiled up at the two before standing up, brushing sand off her dress while still holding on to the seashells she had collected.

The splashing in the ocean ceased immediately. So much for watching selkies play like Carl had heard in so many of the lore told to him by his family. Oh well. At least Saoirse was doing the right thing and coming right back. Her tiny hand fell into his, so weatherered from age clutching her soft ones that smelled heavily of sea salt. She just said 'pretty', and at first, he thought she meant the shoreline.
"Aye. It is pretty..."
But then a female voice greeted him and Saoirse. He inclined his head to follow the little girl pointing. A redheaded woman in a gown the same color as coral was brushing her dress, holding a collection of seashells in one hand. Oh, so that's what she meant. Yes, the woman was pretty. Whoever held her heart was one lucky lad.
"Afternoon, miss." A smile crossed his own lips.

The woman soon greeted them. She seemed pretty nice, although Saorise didn't go towards her at first. It still took her a little while to warm up to strangers. Instead, she stayed by Carl's side, holding his hand. She did have quite the collection of seashells going on though. And that was enough for Saorise to inch a little closer. She remembered collecting them herself back when she was in Ireland. She would always find the prettiest ones that had lots of colors and shone in the sunlight. Then, she would make a necklace out of them, or see if any would make a good hair pin. Her mom was good at that. The flashbacks ended there though. Like so many times before, Saorise stuffed them away before they could make her feel bad.

When she offered her hello, the man gave his own greeting and smiled at her. It actually completely removed the grumpy look that had been on his face a moment before and replaced it with a wonderful smile. She liked that quite a bit and her own grin widened slightly in turn before she turned her head to look at the little girl.
The girl was holding the old man's hand and standing slightly behind him but she quickly noticed that her dark eyes were focused on the seashells she was holding in her arm. Lucille slowly knelt down so that she was on the same eyelevel as the little girl before speaking in a friendly and kind voice.
"Hello there. Would you like one of my seashells? There's a special one I found that you might like."
With that Lucille sorted through her collection until she found what she was looking for. It was the biggest shell she had found yet, a little smaller then a fist, and formed a conch shape. Its color was an almost pure white except near the opening of the shell were a few black spots lay.
She picked up the shell in her pale hand before holding it out to the girl, waiting to see if she would take it or not.

The little girl was still clutching Carl shyly. Despite this, the other woman appeared to understand. Most young women wanted to do cutesy things when it came to seeing Saiorse, unaware of how she'd react. Instead, the woman was going down to the child's level, a shell being offered as a present. "What do we say to the nice lady, Saoirse?" Carl asked.

Despite not saying anything, the woman seemed to know what was on Saorise's mind. She knelt down and offered her a sea shell. Saorise's eyes widened at the sight of it. It was so pretty. She wordlessly took it from the woman's hand, still staring at it when Carl spoke to her. She looked at the woman and said "Thank you." Her voice was tiny, but at least she had been able to say something.

Lucille waited patiently to see if the young girl would take the shell and after a few moments, the child took it from her and held it in her tiny hands. The older man then reminded the little girl to say thank you, which she did in a small but sweet voice.
However, Lucille didn't rise or leave immediately and instead remained on the same level as the child.
"Saorise? Is that your name? That's quite a unique name, and so beautiful too. Far more unique than a plain name like Lucille."

"You think that's plain, wait till you hear what I'm called." Still leaning on his cane, the edlerly man extended a hand to shake that of the young woman's. "Lucille, you said your name was? I'm Carl Hudson. Saiorse here is a little one I'm looking after." In a low whisper, he added. "Thinking about adopting her."

Saorise nodded, although she felt like Lucille was a pretty name too. She hadn't met anyone with that name before. Carl introduced her as well as himself, and she couldn't help but beam when he said he was thinking about adopting her. She knew there was a chance he would say no, but she was determined not to let that happen. She had chosen Carl, and she wasn't about to leave his side now.

Lucille looked up at the man and felt a slight hint of embarrassment pass through her when she realized she hadn't even introduced herself to or even really spoken to him. Her focus had mostly been on the little girl but when the man offered his own name and extended a hand, she rose to her full height before reaching for his hand.
"Well, it truly is a pleasure to meet...."
However, Lucille's words suddenly cut off as she grasped the man, Carl's, hand in her own. For a moment her eyes completely lost their focus and her mind was blank. She couldn't seem to remember where she was or what she was doing or who she even was. All that seemed to fill her mind was a vague confusion and something very distant....
After several moments, her green eyes suddenly came back into focus and she blinked before taking the hand that had been shaking Carl's and putting it to the side of her head.
"....I'm sorry, I was a little dizzy there for a moment."
