Esmeralda had to admit: Nairobi was a real change of pace. Sure, it had the usual things that a city had: tall buildings, lots of traffic, tons of pedestrians. But it felt different. Esmeralda wasn't exactly sure why, but that was how it was to her. Maybe it was the fact that this was her first time in an African country. Usually, the circus tended to hit up places in Asia, Europe, and North America. But, she liked how different it was. It certainly led to some nice sight-seeing. Anytime Esmeralda came across something cool-looking or interesting, she would snap a picture with her phone.

The oasis with Ellie had been one relaxing day for Aurora to get used to the heat of Nairobi. Now that she was much more comfortable under the shade of a parasol, she could stroll through the twon without being afraid anymore. Besides, Nairobi had such wonderful smells, like the late blooming flowers and the rich, earthy smell of roasted coffee. She was watching a group of dancers sing in an unknown language, twirling in costumes that looked like rich sunsets. She wondered if the courts could replicate it with their large plant supplies.

Even though she was surrounded by strangers, Esmeralda was able to pick out one familiar face in the crowd. It took her a moment to recognize her, since a big parasol covered most of her head, but the long, flowing blonde hair made her realize who it was. "Aurora, hey!" Esmeralda gave a wave as she hurried over. She hadn't spent a ton of time with the fairy over the last few months, but they were in the dance troupe together. Esmeralda couldn't remember the last time they were together that wasn't related to work. Maybe she should change that. "How are you doing?" she asked with a smile.

A familar voice called out her name from the miling people through Nairobi. Aurora had to sheidl her eyes as she scanned the crowds, careful not to hit anyone with her parasol. Through the sunlight glare, she caught the bright eyed, curly haired face of Esmeralda. They had never spoken outside of group settings, and it made the half-Faerie a touch nervous. Would Esmeralda be as nice as she had been when they met as a group? Oh, she didn't know. But it would be rude to just ignore the witch slash dancer. She waved timidly to Esmeralda, looking up at sunrise-eaque scarf above. "Well, I...I have been slowly...is the saying 'coming out of my shelf?'"

Esmeralda gave a little laugh. "I think it's 'shell,'" she said. It seemed like Aurora was still getting the hang of modern expressions. But at least she was making strides in the right direction. Esmeralda remembered how shy she had been when she had first come here. She barely spoke to anyone and her voice rarely rose above a quiet whisper. She felt like the fairy had changed since arriving here. "Whatcha doing out here?" she asked. Had Aurora come to check out the city too?

"...Oh." In the past, Aurora would have run away and cowered in a corner over making a mistake like messing up an expression. But, she remembered how Rai had never judged her, and the laughter from Esmeralda didn't sound spiteful or cruel. She adjusted her parasol in its grip, "I am...just exploring the city. Raimundo and I used to do it before..." she sighed, casting her gaze down. It hurt saying his name sometimes.

Esmeralda blinked. Aurora sounded sad when mentioning Raimundo. Did something happen? Aurora tended to be quiet about a lot of things, so her love life was kind of a mystery to her. She remembered seeing her and Raimundo together sometimes, and they had looked pretty happy. "Did something happen?" she asked, wondering if Aurora would tell her what was going on. Maybe she could help.

Did something happen? More like what happened was so big, Aurora didn't like to talk about it. But, no matter how hard she tried to stop herself, it just came out like a waterfall, ceasing to end until every detail was given;
'He had a creature in his mind called the Sapphire Dragon. One night, he and I were talking about dream worlds - my mother controls them herself, so we wee comparing - and then, all of the sudden, he collapsed. This large creature loomed towards me. Belle wasn't there to help calm it down, but Raimundo said not to worry, he wouldn't let it hurt me. He flew towards it, said he wasn't afraid and...then...everything went blue, and then next thing I knew, they both were gone."
Tears had begun pouring down her cheeks. The Sapphire Dragon and Raimundo finally clashing until both no longer existed. He had died protecting her.

"Oh jeez." Esmeralda felt bad for being out of the loop about that. She should have been there to help, or something. "I had no idea. I'm so sorry." She instantly pulled Aurora into a hug, not sure what else to do.

Aurora had been so wrapped into her crying, that she didn't realize what had happened until she felt a comforting shoulder press against her face. It was Esmeralda, holding her into an embrace she had seen many female companions give those who were sad. Instinctively, she returned the hug, answering mellowly, "It is not your fault. If what Belle says is true, you would have done so much to assist."

"Yeah, I guess I would have," was all Esmeralda said in reply. She just felt bad that she didn't know Aurora was going through such a hard time. What kind of friend was she if she couldn't notice when her friends were troubled? "Well, I might not have been there for you then, but I'm gonna be there for you now. I can promise you that much," she said.

Was this how it felt to have a human friend? Aurora wasn't used to getting all this compassion. Sure, there was Kaya, but both of them had bonded out of a common fear. Esmeralda and Aurora didn't really talk at all. The promise Esmeralda gave was one that sounded sincere. Besides, Belle said she was loyal, so why mistrust her? "What sights were you...looking at?"

Aurora soon changed the subject, and asked what Esmeralda had seen so far in this city. Maybe a distraction would do Aurora some good, just to cheer her up a bit. "Mostly the buildings and stuff," she said. "It's weird. When people usually show pictures of African countries, they just show, like, little villages and the savanna and stuff. They don't show any of this." She gestured to the busy streets and tall buildings around her.

Buildings and stuff? What was it about humans and staring at buildings? To her, they were just giant sculptures of metal and glass fused together. True, technology was the modern day equivalent of magic, but it didn't quite phase her. But, hen she looked out at the conjunction of metal and the grasslands expanding in a sea of green and brown up ahead. Maybe she was being too harsh on city life. "That is true. They say you can take the train to a city called Mombassa, which is said to be where the city meets the jungle." A tour bus pulled up close, depicting a picture of a tall mountain range She squinted her eyes, trying to pronounce the name. "Khaleei-man-ja-roo?" she read out loud. "Humans have such unusual names for things, be they mountain or trees."

Esmeralda had to laugh a little. "Yeah, I guess we do have weird names for things sometimes," she admitted. If there was one thing humans liked to do, it was name things. Conquerors did it all the time. When they took over a new place, they threw out the old names for rivers and mountain ranges and gave them new ones that fit their own language. "Do fairies have unusual names for things too?" she asked.
