Aidan was at a loss. Saorise was worrying him. Her behavior was strange, and he couldn't figure out what was going on. And the only solution he could think of was to get Carl involved. If anyone could get her to talk, it was him. It seemed like his friend had a plan when he said to bring Saorise to the edges of the town, but Aidan wasn't sure what exactly it was. But he wasn't about to question it. He trusted his friend. He glanced down at Saorise, who was practically glued to his side. She was looking all around, as if expecting somebody to jump them at any moment. What was she so scared of?

The edges of town was where Aidan wanted to rendezvous. More importantly, the reason he wanted to talk had to do with Saoirse. Apparently, she was showing signs of anxiety. Whenever she was near adults she was closest to, not counting Aisling, she appeared to be stuck to them with ehr dark eyes darting. Carl patted the brakes on his balloon cart, satisfied with the locking, before hobbling off to meet Aidan. Or rather, fake-hobbling. Come twilight, his gargoyle senses made him act less like an eighty year old and more like a fifty year old. "Aidan, Saoirse," he called as he recognized the white robes.

Carl soon arrived. That made Aidan feel a little better, and Saorise as well. But she still seemed reluctant to leave Aidan's side for a moment. She glanced up at the old man, worry in her eyes. Aidan knew what she was thinking.
"Nobody's going into the forest, Saorise. I promise," Aidan said. Technically, it was a white lie. Aidan couldn't stop everybody from going there. But he needed to say something in order to put the girl at ease.
It seemed to do the trick. Saorise left Aidan's side and immediately ran for Carl's, clinging onto her adoptive grandfather's hand.
"Think you can tell Carl what spooked you in the woods?" Aidan asked, in one last attempt to get her to talk.
Saorise didn't exactly reply yes or not. But she did hold onto Carl's hand tighter, and she looked around again as if trying to spot an enemy in the growing twilight. Aidan sighed and shook his head. He gave a glance at Carl as if to say "This is what I'm talking about." Despite being a healer, this was something Aidan couldn't fix. This required a more personal touch. And Carl was the man for the job.

The shyness in Saoirse was something that was incredibly knew. There was select mute and then there was a sense of fear. The little girl was spooked by something. The fact she didn't want to leave Aidan was what made him arch an eyebrow. But when Aidan promised there wouldn't be any forest, Saoirse was wiggling her tiny hand into Carl's wrinkled one. She didn't say what was wrong upon asking. "How long has this been going on?" Carl asked Aidan. "Lass, it's not like you to be afraid of nature."

"Since earlier today. Won't say a word about it," Aidan replied. "All she's said is that she doesn't want anyone going in the forest." Sure, Saorise had always been quiet, but Aidan had noticed that she had been speaking a little bit more since getting close to Carl. But now, she was completely silent except for her desperate pleas for Aisling not to go into the woods earlier.
Saorise heard the conversation, but it didn't matter to her. They could jabber all they wanted. As long as they stayed out of the woods, she would be satisfied. Or, at least, as satisfied as she could be. Every time she closed her eyes, she could see the deer dropping like a stone and the hunters' guns. She gave a shudder.

Going into the forest. Saoirse was a little girl, after all, and things in the world frightened her. But to be afraid of nature, telling people not to go into the forest. The tiny selkie shivered next to Carl, which did not go unnoticed. "Now, now," he patted her dark hair gently. "It's all right. Whatever frightened you, I'll take care of it for you."

Carl immediately spoke gently to Saorise, who still seemed pretty scared. He saw her relax, just a little bit. But he still considered that progress. It was more than what he was able to do with her. Aidan was confident that Carl could get Saorise to confide in him. The little girl trusted him more than anybody else. "Well, I'll leave you to it, then," he said. He turned to Saorise. "I'll see you later, okay?"
Saorise gave a nod as Aidan waved at her and headed off. She wasn't sure what he expected Carl to do to make her spill the beans, but either way, being next to her adoptive grandfather gave her some comfort. Nothing could hurt her if she was by his side. At least, that was what she kept telling herself.

Carl curtly nodded to Aidan, silently understanding what it was the healer wanted him to do. They would have to find the root of what it was that spooked Saoirse so. That meant getting close to the forest, but not going in it. After all, he could protect her with his growing strength. His can squeaked with protest as he knelt to the little girl, his blue eyes looking into her big, dark brown ones. "I have a little treat for you tonight, Saoirse. Remember when I said I'd take you for a night flight?"

Some of the apprehension Saorise was feeling went away in an instant when Carl mentioned his promise to take her out flying sometime. She gave an eager nod. Carl's gargoyle form always fascinated her, and she liked seeing it any chance she could. In that way, she and Carl were similar. They had their human forms, but they could also turn into something else, whether it was a gargoyle or a seal.

Carl looked back towards the horizon. The sky was beginning to turn the color of a peach, which meant any moment now, he'd no longer be the wrinkly old man using a cane. He stretched his back, popping a few stiff joints. He took a breath through the nose, exhaling in relief. "Well, in an hour, I'll take ya. So, how would you like to kill time?"

An hour...that was a long time to wait. But Saorise didn't exactly have any ideas. She just gave a shrug in response. As long as they didn't go near the forest, she was up for anything. She cast a look back in its direction and swallowed nervously.

The shrug was the only response from Saoirse. If the plan Aidan wanted him to do would work, he'd need to at least be near the fringe of the forest. But some time far away wouldn't be so bad. Carl glanced around, his heightened senses picking up the scent of flaky butter and roasting coffee. The combination of croissants and coffee was typically a breakfast for Belle Rosenblatt, but it did smell delicious. Besides, caffeine would be needed for extra sights if he was going to find what frightened Saoirse. "How about a croissant qwith your morai?"

As soon as Carl mentioned croissants, Saorise did catch a whiff of the buttery pastries baking nearby. She had seen them plenty of times on TV, but had never actually tasted one before. She gave a nod in response. Maybe some food would calm the churning of nerves in her stomach.

The nod was all Carl needed to hear. Bring her closer to his side, he walked off, using the scent to locate the pastry shop where the butteriness was going to be. The smell was coming from a small place called Yolk Bath. Interesting name Carl mused. Was it associated with the yolks that were supposedly used for fortune telling? It didn't matter. He walked inside, smiling t the rustic venue with a bit of eae. It was similar to a small restaurant in Scotland that he and Ellie had gone to in their married life. It seemed the life he had was coming full circle. Ellie would have loved Saorise.

Saorise felt better once they were out of the open and inside the building. The smell of croissants was stronger, which she liked. It reminded her of the kitchen back at the circus, which always had interesting smells coming from it. Carl was quiet, not asking any questions about her for the moment, which she was glad of.
