"Oh, please don't mention him aging,"Belle sat down in what visitors dubbed her 'reading chair'. It was a cushioned seat made from a rust colored textile that was soft and smooth like satin but durable like denim. Her hand came to her temple, "I get the nervous just thinking about it."

Esmeralda looked up. "Could bad things happen?" she asked. She remembered that whole mess Duncan had gotten into, and how he had lost his emotions for a while. Could something like that be in store for Xander once he got older? Or was it just the usual worries that any parent had about their child growing up? Especially with a half dragon like this, who knew what he might end up like. Esmeralda hoped he couldn't breathe fire by the time he hit the "terrible twos." That would be chaos.

Belle looked at her son in his aunt's arms. She knew what Esmeralda was asking. Would he be going through a sort of early set of puberty like Duncan had gone through with the whole half dragon thing. "I doubt something like that will happen. One, after the whole Duncan incident, my, er, father in law, promised never to pull the 'make-my-son-my-emotionless-slave' trick ever again. And two, since Xander's quarter dragon, chances are it wouldn't be as extreme."

That was good to hear. The last thing Bell and Duncan needed was something else to worry about. They had gone through enough. Esmeralda felt like they deserved to relax and just be a family. "Well, if anything does come up, you let me know, okay?" she asked. Belle seemed pretty sure that things would go smoothly, but life in the circus tended to have a few hiccups along the way. Even if Duncan's father wasn't going to do something crazy, there were always other external forces involved, like when Strato Form Industries or Alice had decided to target the circus.

Belle's smile became wider. Esmeralda was Belle's number one person to go to whenever there was trouble. They had been through a lot together themselves, particularly the Strato-Form imprisonment. Belle flexed her hand, looking at the small nearly invisible scars from when she punched the glass after what Rourke had done. Than goodness no more of that nonsense was going to fly. "Absolutely! We can't fight for Xander by ourselves." The baby was shaking the toy, now looking up at Esmeralda and seeming to offer it.

Esmeralda laughed. She and Belle were quite the dynamic duo together. Even when things were crazy, they still had each other's backs. She glanced down when Xander handed her the toy he was playing with. "Aw, thank you darling," she said, affectionately nuzzling his head.

The baby made content babbling noises at Esmeralda's affections. "I swear," Belle shook her head at the love fest, "you are the perfect mother figure. No wonder all the kids at the cirque love you. Oh! Can I get you anything while I'm up? I was going to get some things to munch on while we talked, and I want to be a good host."

"What can I say? I'm a natural," Esmeralda joked with a laugh. That did seem to be a talent of hers, though. Kids loved her, even before she had adopted Shanti. It was often why Facilier had her show new people around the circus. She had a way of making kids and adults comfortable. "I'll take some lemonade if you got any," she replied.

Belle stroked her son's hair as she got up. He'd be fine with Esmeralda while she was out just getting drinks. "I'll pour us some glasses. Oh, and Gaara brought by some rosewater baklava. Who knew a desert nomad who didn't have much of a sweet tooth could make a perfect pastry?" She went to the kitchen to peel back the floral scented, nutty layers. The rosiness and the cinnamon taste would pair beautifully with the lemonade. One good thing about having a firebreathing husband; no need for gas stoves to boil water when making beverages. The small glass flutes were filled with the sunshine colored lemonade and sliced pieces of the rosewater baklava onto delicate china plates painted with small yellow roses. "Fortune-telling, sand manipulation, dessert expert, no wonder Raven fell in love with the guy," Esmeralda said with a laugh. Luckily, things had been settled down for those two and their kids for quite a while now. Raven had gone through just about as much crap as Belle. Hopefully, things could stay peaceful like this for a while. "The three of us finally all have kids together. I'm hoping our little gremlins can be best friends like we are."

'Well, first we need to get Xander out of the pooping and babbling stage," Belle said as she returned with the good. She laughed at the twins staring at the baby Xander. Rain and Arella had yet to be introduced; maybe she'd find them. "Here we are, fresh lemonade for the fire witch and desert based dessert. Who would've thought."

Esmeralda laughed. Yes, it was probably best to wait for Xander to pass that stage. But that would happen soon enough. Esmeralda wondered what his first word would be. Would it be something like "mommy" or "daddy?" Or would it be something else? She could hardly wait for that. "Thanks," she said as she took a bite of the baklava. "Hey, this isn't half bad," she said. "I wonder if Cinderella could make some of these." Cinderella was always interested in discovering new foods and recipes. And traveling around the world with the circus provided her with plenty of opportunities.

Belle nodded, piercing her own piece and taking a bite, The floral notes of the rosewater were what made the whole pastry unique. Sure, the baklava would have been fine on its own, but it was no unique piece. "Maybe I'll have him give me a copy to hand over to her," she mused. "I'd love to try her take."

Esmeralda nodded. She was sure Cinderella would appreciate that. "It's kind of funny, watching her and Quasimodo together. He gets all googly-eyed like a little kid. It's too precious." She was glad that those two had found each other.

Belle smiled. Cinderella and Quasimodo were one of those odd pairings that just seemed to work. "I know. The other day I saw him snuggling something she gave him for Valentine's. I told him not to take in the pen so it wouldn't get ruined. I mean, it'd be sad if something your girlfriend gave you got ripped to shreds by other animals, right?"
