Trigon laughed triumphantly as he held a hand out. Raven was standing in his grasp, no longer beautiful and pale. Instead, she looked more demonic and frightening, complete with her eyes being bright yellow and spawning four eyes as opposed to two.
Gaara snapped out of that image from his meditation as a candle blew out. The Sands were always good at showing him visions of the future he didn't want to see. This was the second time they had shown him Raven giving into her father's side. No. This was Raven. His wife, who fought every day and every waking moment to keep Trigon at bay. The only way she would give into that darkness was if something cost her dearly. He was cleaning up his tent to get ready to load on the 'move' to Greece when he heard screams from outside. He lifted the flap and peered out, and blinked in terror.
A huge black/purple bird was flying over the edge of the tents. Gaara knew that magic anywhere. Raven's 'soul self', flying away. But he had never seen it that size, and more importantly, that much in a hurry.
He followed the bird away from the grounds and towards the edge of the chapparall. The grassland was turning gold-orange in the sunset. Gaara didn't want to admit it, but he'd miss this sort of sand. Well, he wouldn't miss the smell, but he would miss quite a bit. The soul self had disappeared, and he scanned for any signs of her. Her blue cape, her violet hair...just something to show that she was near.
He wasn't expecting the rain of her magic.
Black balls of magic began hurling towards the ground. Gaara had to dodge to avoid getting hurt, The sands were on heavy defense mode, shooting every which way to protect him. Animals were scurrying away. One magic blast came towards some tourists. But before they could get hurt, the Sands reacted by swiping the darkness and ccrushing it into thin air.
Gaara glared in the direction of the magic. "Raven! Show yourself!"
She showed herself, all right. Showed herslef looking the exact opposite of how she looked that morning. Instead of being pale, her skin was almost red. Veins of pulsing purple-black magic ran through her body, Her eyes...they were yellow, like in his vision, but she had yet to sprout the extra pair. Her cloak looked tattered and was crested with purple-black feathers. When she address him, he took note that her voice...didn't sound right. It sounded...evil.
"Gaara, I was hoping you'd be by my side."
Gaara folded his arms. "What do you mean by that?"
Raven extended her hand in a beckoning motion. "The day is coming. Come August, my father will blot out the sun and send his legions forth. My power is rising thanks to him. I was expecting other people to beg for mercy, but," her hand touched his cheek. Before, her touches had been gentle and soft. But now it felt like acid. He winced to fight back burns as she walked around him, tracing her hand on him. Where she left her mark, symbols of Trigon's ancient alphabet occured. He had assumed when Trigon visited him in a nightmare, it was just that. No, the Sands had warned him of this, too. "Imagien it, Gaara. You and me, together as the world tumbles..."
"No."
Raven stopped pacing. She looked annoyed. "What did you say?"
Gaara looked long and hard into her eyes. He tried to find any sort of trace of violet in them. The eyes he had stared into and had fallen in love with. Instead, he just saw frustration and anger. Trigon had finally gotten a hold on her. She had fought so hard and now...now she was just giving up. "Raven, if you truly cared about your friends, you wouldn't be doing this. You're full of resentment now. It's written all over your face."
Raven's shoulders heaved silently. The feathers ruffled. The heaving got quicker, and her breaths increased in small doses. She was laughing at him quietly. He patiently waited for her to finish. Her smile was predatory. "Do you think I cared about them? They didn't even like me. But you..." she leaned close to him. If she weren't demonic, he would have let her kiss him, "...we can be together. Forever."
"Raven, there is no 'we' if you want to let Trigon into the world."
Gaara regretted saying it out loud. But it made sense why Raven had succumbed to this darkness. She had been showing signs of insecurity as of late, complete with rages that nearly had set their house on fire. She was feeling inferior to the witches and magicians that were showing up at the cirque. Her friends were closing their doors to her. In that slow descent, Raven's demonic heritage was leaking out and controlling her mind, warping her. The only thing she had left to care about was her family. Gaara wanted nothing to do with that life, and no doubt Rain didn't either.
"You've made your choice. Now I'm making mine."
Raven just stared at him with...disbelief. Her mouth hung open briefly. Then her expression changed. It became an intense glare. Her hands glowed black. "You...betrayed me..." she said it quietly. "You BETRAYED ME!" With an angry roar, she thrust her hand forward. Immediately, Gaara was frozen. His body was being forced to bow down. He tried to fight it, to will the Sands to give him help, but it was like his mind was cut. He had never been telekinetically controlled by Raven, but now he knew why people feared it. It hurt. Big time. He winced and groaned, tryng to think of something to get his mind out of the pain. Before, he would have thought of the same sorceress tormenting him, but not anymore. The only things he thought of were Rain, Charlie, Tulio...the few friends and family he had left.
The Sands reacted in the nick of time. A whip pushed Raven down into the muck, smothering her in dirt. Good. So long as a grain of sand was on her, Gaara could track her memories to figure out where she was. The sand defended him while at the same time provided attacks that blocked her own. She sliced through some of his attacks like butter, and even shielded herself like he did.
Three sand snakes pinned her down. Gaara didn't want to resort to this, but if his vision was right, Raven would give into her demonic side and it wouldn't end well. Her head was bowed low and he approached slowly. The sand was rapping itself like the cotton candy at the cirque. Raven groaned as the pressure built. "Stop it, I...I love you," she murmured.
"...I'm sorry, Raven, but I can't be with you if this is the path you choose. I loved you..."
The emphasis on 'loved' was what sent Raven into the rage he had witnessed. Her eyes became doubled and bright yellow. The sand exploded from where it had been binding her. She came at him with a roar that conveyed everything; anguish, frustration, rage. Black energy was flinging trees, bushes, everything it could get its hand on as Raven rushed. The Sands defended and offended again, and Gaara backed himself as far s he could before thrusting his own hand forward.
The Sands began swirling around Raven. She was too focused on her former lover to even fight back. They became hands, pressing her down and coccooning her once more. More hands dragged her towards the muddy sand. If there was one way to kill her, Gaara wanted to avoid blooshed. He had crushed many people with this sand, the last thing he needed was a reminder of his wife. Tears filled his eyes as he walked over to her.
"I'm sorry."
As if him choking out that wasn't enough. Raven's head was barely above the mud when he saw it change. The demonic presence disappeared in her eyes, revealing them as the wide, curious, deep violet hue he remembered. She just gasped for air before being sucked completely by the Sands.
Gaara shut his eyes, tears streaming from the tight lids and down his cheeks. He had stopped the end of the world...but at what price?
