Carl was too busy looking at the little girl that he didn't register as quickly as he would have liked. To say something like in front of a girl like Sairose would dash her hopes of adoption, if she was mature for her age to understand 'test run' didn't mean full on adoption. After a momentary paused, he nodded. Ellie would have wanted him to take the little girl under his figurative wing...maybe physical, too.

Saorise's eyes got wide with excitement. She was going to stay with Carl? For real? That sent her into overload and she started bouncing around in circles, giving little excited squeals.
"Saorise, remember, it's just a test run," Aisling said. "We're just going to see how things go, okay?" She hated to rain on Saorise's parade, but she was thinking along the same lines as Carl. She wanted her to understand what was going on, and not get her hopes terribly high.
Saorise managed to nod in between bounces. This was still amazing to her. This wash her big chance, and she wouldn't mess it up. She would do everything she could to show Carl that she would be the perfect granddaughter for him.

Saorise's reaction was one that Carl himself could deem as adorable. Most children acted this way when hearing they were going to sit on Santa's lap in a public square, but this was a reaction to being adopted; or rather on the path to adoption. Aisling had a similar plane of thought and explained it out loud, but he knew the exicted little girl wouldn't listen. All that mattered was someone wanted her.
"While I'm here," Carl added, "Ya still have those rheumatism pills? I ran out."

"You know I do," Aidan replied with a grin. It took him a moment to hunt them down, but he managed to find the pills after scanning his shelves for a few moments. He handed them to Carl.
Saorise glanced back and forth between Aidan and Carl. She had no idea what rheumatism meant, and it sounded like an awfully big word. "Rheu...rheuma...rheumatism?" she asked, saying the word out-loud. It sounded funny when she said it.

The pills rattled in the small container during the handoff. Ah, finally, relief would come at last, just as he was pocketing them into the back of his pants, Saiorise piped up in her lilting voice. She was trying to say the big word he had just echoed, and he chuckled at her finally getting out clumsily. "It's what happens when ya get old. Yer bones act all funny when weather changes." Fall ws on its way, highlighted by shifting winds.

Saorise frowned. That didn't sound good. But hopefully, Carl would get better now that he had those pills. Anytime Aidan gave pills or herbal medicine to somebody, they always left feeling better. Saorise wondered if all old people got rheumatism. Or, most of them at least. It didn't look like Aidan had it. He still moved around quite a bit for somebody his age. At least, that was what other people said.

Carl once again knelt to the little girl's level, looking her in the seal-like eyes. "But don't worry. Once I have these in my system," he patted the filled pocket, "I'll be running just as fast as Aidan here. Maybe ven faster, but...that's unlikely. At least not until sundown."

Saorise gave a smile at that. That made her feel better, and the idea of seeing Carl's gargoyle form still made her excited. She made a mental note to show Carl her seal form sometime too. Maybe she could take him to that river in the forest. That could be a good place to show it off.

Carl gave the two friends a grateful smile. The smile was not just for the pills, but it was for introducing him to the sweet Saorise. "So, little one," he knelt besides her, "what do you like to do? Maybe I'll have time befor emy balloon shift so you can show me."

Saorise felt like the question was kind of tough. There were so many things she liked to do. It took her a moment to decide on something that she thought both she and Carl would enjoy. She wrapped her right hand around his, and pointed towards the forest with her left.
"She does love the woods here," Aidan said. "She's always off exploring or checking out the river." It only made sense that Saorise liked the river, since she was a selkie and all. She loved swimming in it.

German forests were known for their magical atmosphere, especially at night. And with the change of the seasons, it was perhaps even more magical. At the mention of a river, Carl stiffened but then relaxed. That was right; Saorise was part seal, which meant frigid cold waters would do little to upset her if she fell in either by accident or just going for a dive.
"Well, good thing she has a gargoyle escorting her to the woods," Carl chuckled. "She'll be protected if things get too creepy.:

Saorise grinned. She hadn't seen anything totally scary in the forest yet, but she liked the idea of Carl protecting her. It made her feel safe.
"If you go in the woods with her though, be prepared to spend a lot of time in there," Aisling said. "She can stay in there for, like, hours. Kind of like me." That was one thing Aisling and Saorise had in common. The forest fascinated both of them, and could stay there for a long time.
Saorise nodded in agreement. There may not be enough time to show Carl the forest now, but she could always take him there after he was done selling balloons. Maybe it could even be at night. He could show his gargoyle form, she could bring her selkie coat along and show him her seal form, it sounded so perfect.

"Oh don't worry. I've been spending a lot of time at certain places in gargoyle form." It made him wonder if that fox fellow...was his name Robin...would be back on guard. Their conversations made the job less boring. But now with Saorise going out into the river to spend time gave him another opportunity to enjoy Europe's forests in their transformative state. "Besides, the woods never bothered me. It's just like being back in Scotland."

Saorise gave a happy little "Yay!" at that. She tugged on Carl's arm, hoping maybe they could head to the forest right now, even if it was just for a little bit. They could look at the trees, find cool rocks or see if any flowers were still blooming. Anything was fine with Saorise at this point.

Tiny little hands tugged at Carl's arm earnestly. Well, Saorise was not letting go of the idea of getting out to the forest right away. The day was still weaning, which meant there was time for playing. "All right. You've been patient enough, little one," Carl's smile was small but genuine. He gave Aidan and Aisling a grateful nod before settling his cane down several pegs, looking at the child to lead the way.
