Aisling and Aidan had to admit: Saorise was fitting in here better than they had originally thought. It seemed that the friends she had made didn't care that she barely said a word. They liked her anyway. And that made both of them happy. At the moment, Aidan was organizing a shelf while Aisling and Saorise flipped through one of his books. Every so often, Saorise would point to a picture or a word and Aisling would explain what it meant. Little did Aisling and Aidan know, that Saorise's mind was on something else. Ever since Hiro had talked about how he had been adopted, she wondered if the same could happen to her. Sure, Aisling and Aidan took her in, and she was grateful for it, but it wasn't the same as the family she used to have. She wanted one again. She just had to find the right person.

Out of pills to help ease his old joints. Well, better time than none to get them filled. Carl parked his balloon cart next to the infirmary; partially on purpose, partially to get a crowd to mile away from some of the performers he wondered would get harrased. And since he wasn't in gargoyle form, she couldn't exactly swoop in to the rescue. He popped his stiff back as he entered.
"Afternoon, Aidan. Aisling." The old balloon seller's worn face managed to crack a bit of a smile. Aorund these two, he flt he could be himself without any judgment. It was ither Aidan or Robin.

Aidan glanced up when a familiar face entered the tent. "Carl, hi there. Haven't seen you in a while," he said.
"Hey Carl," Aisling said with a smile.
Saorise looked up, wondering who Carl was. She looked at him for a long moment. Aisling had no idea what the little girl was thinking. Just when she was about to ask, the selkie gave a big smile and cried out "Mórai!" before running over and hugging Carl.
Aisling and Aidan looked at each other, their eyes wide. "Mórai" was the Gaelic word for "grandpa." Not to mention, this was the first time Saorise had talked without any prompting whatsoever. "Um...Carl, have you met Saorise before?" Aisling asked, feeling thoroughly confused.

The Gaelic word 'Morai" echoed from somewhere in the tent. Was it just his old senses getting to him? Was he having a flashback of memories in Scotland once more. His hearing aid buzzed, but not to the point where it was shrieking like it did when most children yelled. And it was now that the old gargoyle turned to look at the dark haired figure sitting next to Aisling. Both the fairy and the healer were looking on with their eyes wide, like this was something new. The old man shook his head in answer to the question.
"I didn't know she was here until she spoke," he confessed. "Was she here the whole time?"

"Yeah. She's kinda...quiet," Aidan said.
"Quiet? She hardly speaks at all!" Aisling said. "The only thing she usually says is her name." She ran a hand through her hair before deciding that Carl probably needed an explanation on where Saorise came from. "I found her not too long ago, by herself. All we know is what her name is, that she's from Ireland, and that she's a selkie. You're the first person she's ever spoken to voluntarily."
Saorise didn't seem to be listening to the conversation. She just wanted to know all about Carl. He just seemed so...right, for lack of a better word. She felt attached to him instantly. He had to be the one who would adopt her. He just had to be. Then she could have a new family and everything would be fine.

Quiet and being able to say her name often sounded like the girl was either incredibly shy or was a mystic being. Aisling saying the child was a Selkie confirmed one of the few ideas he had just looking look at the little girl who had spoken the Gaelic word. Irish Gaelic was very different from Scottish Gaelic, so the language barrier would be up just a crack. He approach Aisling and the little girl, his cane thudding eth each step to approach.
She was every bit as wide eyed and curious as a young being would be. Even the way her doleful, innocent brown eyes looked up highlighted the seal within her human body. He got down on one knee to get at her level, blue eyes locking into brown. "Hello, lass. Not afraid of old Carl Hudson, are ya?"

Saorise shook her head while giving a "Mm-mmm." Who could ever be afraid of Carl? He seemed so nice.
Aisling could see the selkie was a little confused. "He's a gargoyle. You know how I look a little scary when I turn into a wolf? It's kind of the same thing."
Saorise's eyes widened as she gave a big smile. A gargoyle? That was amazing! She had heard stories about them, and how they used to defend castles from invaders long ago. "I wanna see, I wanna see!" she said excitedly, tugging on Carl's arm.
Aisling and Aidan gave a little start. Saorise said so much around Carl. Why did he strike such a chord with her? It made them both extremely curious.

If it was true that the little girl didn't talk much except for her own name, Carl was confused. She seemed to speak like any other little child who came up to his balloon cart. But the fact she wanted to see his gargoyle form, tugging his arm with urgency, softened somthing in him. The last person he had shown it too was Sally, but she had been there at the right time. And at high noon, the sun wasn't going down.
"Sorry to disappoint you, lass," he patted her tiny hands with his old, wrinkled, liverspotted ones, "but it only comes out at the night time, when the moon is out. Aisling can turn whenever she wants. I cannot."

Saorise frowned. It only happened at night? That would take forever! She gave a little groan.
Aidan had to laugh. "That's the first time I've seen a child disappointed at seeing something that other people deem 'scary.'" While he and the other circus members were used to Carl's gargoyle form, he knew it could creep some other people out. Saorise didn't seem to mind that at all, though. Maybe it was because she could turn into an animal herself, although a seal was very different from a gargoyle.

Carl smiled and laughed along with Aidan. "Aye, this is a first." The only time children were not afraid of the gargoyle transformation was if it came around Halloween, when the creepies and spooky were deemed acceptable. He leaned against his cane, looking down at Saorise with a softening face of understanding. "Oh, don't pout, lass. Perhaps...er, Aidan, is she staying with you?" he glanced at the healer, knowing she had been discovered, but there had been nothing about parents made mention of.

"For the time being," Aidan replied. "Until somebody else would like to look after her." He knew that some kids ended up getting adopted when they came here, but on the flip side, he knew that some of them weren't so lucky. So, he was content to look after Saorise unless somebody wanted to take her in.
Saorise looked at Aidan before pointing excitedly at Carl. He could adopt her, right? It would be perfect.
Aisling's eyes widened slightly. "Saorise, you just met the guy. Come on," he said. Sure, Carl was good with kids when selling balloons and stuff, but selling stuff to kids and looking after them were two very different things.

"Uh...why is she pointing?" The little girl was now directly pointing at him like he was dressed in a Santa Claus outfit and she was wanting to sit on his lap. The thought of enthusiatic children was nothing new. When he was still young and Ellie was still alive, they had talked about starting a family. But when Ellie found out she couldn't bear children, those hopes were dashed. It had been a long month of sadness, ut the couple moved on to thinking about finding the Cirque a feat he accomplished years after Ellie's death

Aisling figured she might as well tell the truth. It couldn't hurt. "Seems like Saorise thinks you're the guy who can adopt her," she said. In a way, it was sort of understandable. After hearing how Hiro got adopted, it was only natural that Saorise would want the same. Aisling just wished that Saorise could get to know a person first before choosing them.
Saorise gave an excited nod. In her mind, there was nothing wrong with what she wanted. Carl could be like a grandpa to her. They were a perfect match, she was sure of it.

Adoption? A little bit extreme for someone her age to be thinking about. And of all the places to think about adoption, why at a place where pretty much everyone became family in one form or another? Was that not family enough? But instead of asking those questions out loud, he looked at the little girl confirming Aisling's comment with a nod. He looked at Saiorise again. Somehow she had spoken just by him entering the room. Could it be possible he was the only one who could reach her.
"...I think having Aisling around is more trouble than it's worth," Carl teased Aidan with a wink. But the wink was a double message. Officially adopting the child was one big risk. Taking the time to know her as she stayed wth him was something different. "Taking one little girl off your hands wouldn't be too much trouble."

"So...what you're suggesting is like a test run?" Aidan asked. That sounded a bit doable. Saorise may have formed an attachment to Carl already, but she didn't really know that much about him, and vice versa. But if he looked after her and they spent time together, they could see where things took them. It sounded like a good solution, for the moment.
