Shanti had to admit: the forest here was pretty cool. She already loved exploring it. The trees were taller than any other she had seen. And the leaves were so big, they blocked out the sun light half the time. She didn’t mind, though. There were still plenty of interesting things to look at. She had already found a couple of fire lilies, which had bright orange and red petals. Shanti wondered what other kinds of flowers this place had. Maybe there would be roses here. Those were her favorite.
At that moment, however, something else caught her eye. And it wasn’t a tree or a flower. It was a house, a big one, practically a mansion. Shanti’s brow furrowed quizzically. She didn’t remember seeing that when she had explored the place yesterday. But, she was curious enough to step closer and take a look. The mansion was made out of shining white stone, and the roof seemed to be made of brick. The forest path led straight to the front door. As Shanti walked closer, roses suddenly sprung up as if from no where, bordering the path. She gasped in delight. Did this house know somehow that she liked roses?
One the windows suddenly opened, and a girl poked her head outside. She seemed to be about Shanti’s age, with bright blonde hair and big blue eyes. It took her a moment to notice Shanti, but as soon as she did, she gave a friendly smile.
“Hello there!” she called cheerfully as she waved.
“Hello,” Shanti replied. “Did you make these?” She gestured to the roses.
“Uh huh,” the girl replied. “I love roses. They’re my favorite.”
“Mine too,” Shanti said happily. “I’ve never been able to make them with magic, though. You must be really good.”
The girl blinked in surprise at that. “Wait, you can do magic too?”
“Yup,” Shanti answered proudly. “I’m a witch.”
“Me too,” the girl replied, still looking quite astonished. She paused for a moment before saying “Wait right there.”
The girl disappeared from the window. A couple of seconds later, she opened the front door. She seemed to be dressed kind of old-fashioned, with a blue dress that ended just above her knees, white stockings, and shiny black shoes. A black ribbon was tied in her hair.
“I’m Alice,” she said, giving a little curtsy. “Would you like to come inside? I’ve…never met another witch before.”
“Sure,” Shanti said with a smile. “My name’s Shanti.”
She quickly stepped inside as Alice shut the door behind her. Shanti gawked in amazement. The mansion was even prettier inside than it was outside. A glittering chandelier hung on the ceiling, and it had real candles in it. The staircase was big and grand. Vases of roses were everywhere.
“Wow. Your house is amazing,” Shanti complimented.
“Thank you,” Alice said politely. “Come on, let’s go to the parlor. I always have guests there.”
She walked to a nearby room, Shanti right behind her. She opened two big glass doors to reveal a room with two plushy green sofas. A coffee table lay between them. There were more vases filled with roses.
“Please, sit,” Alice said as she sat in on one sofa. Shanti quickly sat in the one across from her. Both girls had lots of questions about the other, but Shanti started first.
“Have you really never met another witch before?”
“Yes,” Alice replied. “Most of the guests I have here are regular humans. Have you met other witches besides me?”
“Uh huh,” Shanti replied wtih a nod. “There were a few in the orphanage where I grew up. And there’s lots of ‘em in the circus that I’m with.”
“A circus?” Alice asked, growing curious. “You’re in a circus that has other witches?”
“Oh, there’s lots more besides witches,” Shanti explained. “We have vampires, fairies, dragons, you name it. My dad who adopted me is a demi-god. But my mom’s a witch too, so she’s teaching me everything she knows.”
Alice just gave a thoughtful nod at that, as if she was processing all this information carefully. Then she suddenly asked “Would you like something to drink? Or eat? I can whip up some tea and strawberry shortcake.”
“Yeah,” Shanti said with a nod, thinking that Alice was going to go to the kitchen and get it. But, to her amazement, Alice just wiggled her fingers and two cups of steaming tea appeared, along with two plates that had strawberry shortcake.
“Wow, you’re so good at magic,” Shanti said as she took her plate. “You must have been born a prodigy or something. Or did your parents teach you how to do it?”
“My parents…aren’t around so much,” Alice said as she sipped from her teacup. “They’re away on business a lot.”
“Oh,” Shanti said. That was kind of sad. She knew parents had to work and stuff, but that shouldn’t mean that they had to neglect their children in the process. “So, it’s just you here?”
The door suddenly creaked open, and almost as if it was answering her, a cat walked in. It was mostly black and was a bit fat. It immediately hopped up onto the sofa and curled up into a ball next to Alice.
“Well, I’ve got Lucifer,” Alice said with a little smile.
Shanti blinked. “Lucifer? That’s his name?” she asked.
“He was adopted a few years back,” Alice explained. “It’s the only name he’ll respond too. I think whoever owned him previously had a sick sense of humor or something. But we still love him.” She scratched Lucifer behind the ears.
Shanti ate her cake in silence for a moment. Alice seemed like a really nice girl. But it seemed like things were a bit lonely, if she only had her cat for company.
“The circus will probably be here for a while,” she said. “Maybe I can visit you? We could play games or pick flowers.”
Alice smiled. “I’d like that.”
“Great,” Shanti said, smiling in return. She set her plate down. “I should probably get going. My mom will wonder where I am. But I’ll be sure to tell her all about you.”
“No, no, no,” Alice said hastily. “Please, just…keep this a secret, okay?”
“Huh? Why?” Shanti asked.
“My parents…don’t usually let me have company over while they’re away,” Alice said. “I could get in big trouble.”
Shanti thought for a moment before reluctantly saying “Okay.” She wished she could tell other people, though. Maybe she could get more people to visit Alice, and then she wouldn’t be so lonely.
Alice seemed to know what she was thinking and gave a little sigh. “You can tell some of your friends. But they can’t tell anybody else. Okay?”
Shanti smiled at that. “Okay. They’ll keep it a secret, don’t worry. And I’ll be sure to have them visit you. Then you can have lots of friends.”
“Sounds like fun,” Alice said, smiling again. Lucifer started purring, almost as if in agreement.
“I’ll see you real soon,” Shanti promised before heading out. She was practically bursting with excitement. Alice was so amazing, and nice too. She was sure some of her friends would like to meet her, like Ponyo or Arella. Maybe Wendy could meet her too.
As soon as Shanti was out the door, Alice and Lucifer glanced at each other. Words passed between them, even though they didn’t say a thing.
She’s definitely a witch that was born with her powers, Alice thought to Lucifer. However, she has lots of supernatural friends at that circus. They’d be awfully nice to have over.
You sure seemed to charm Shanti, Lucifer thought. She fell for your story: hook, line, and sinker.
Of course she did. I’ve been using it for years, Alice replied. I may have to wait a while before I snag her and her friends, though. This circus might have some powerful people. But I’ll get them. Just you wait.
Lucifer purred a little louder at that. Alice just smiled and sipped her tea.
((I'm being such a tease, I know, I know. But I wanted to at least get this done before I went on vacation. So, as of right now, Alice will only be meeting child characters, no adults. If you've got a child character, feel free to send me a message and Alice can meet them. As for teenagers, that's up to you guys. If you have a teenage character and want Alice to meet them, we can do that.))
