Jing felt like he had made some pretty good sales today. A lot of kids had visited his stand. It always made him glad to see them get excited when they won a prize. But now, it was time to get some rest and relaxation at home. However, that wasn’t quite the case as he opened the door.
The first thing Jing noticed was the smell of smoke. That was never good. Then, he heard the sound of something breaking.
“Hotaru?” he called hesitantly, wondering what was going on.
“Ugh! No, no, no!” was all he got in response. It was Hotaru, and it was coming from the kitchen.
Jing quickly walked there, but halted in his tracks at what he saw. Hotaru was desperately trying to stop a giant flame that had erupted from a frying pan on the stove. And the more desperate she got, the more her powers reacted, usually in the form of making something explode, whether it twas a cup or an orange.
“Hotaru, what the heck is going on?” Jing cried.
Hotaru spun around, noticing him for the first time. Her hair was a mess and her whole face was covered in sweat. “Jing! I just…I don’t know…I thought I followed the directions…” A potted plant nearby burst, sending dirt and pot pieces everywhere.
Jing gave a little sigh before grabbing a lid and sticking it onto the frying pan. He quickly turned the stove off, and within a couple of seconds, the flames died down.
Hotaru blinked. “Oh.” She hadn’t thought of that. “Jing, I’m sorry. I just…wanted to make something special. You’re always working so hard and-”
“Hotaru, relax, it’s okay,” Jing said, giving a little smile as he put his hand on her shoulder. “I’m just glad you’re not hurt.” Kitchen fires could be lethal, after all. He glanced around the room, which was covered with plate shards, dirt, and who knew what else, before saying “How about we clean all this up and just eat some of those microwavable meals you bought last week?”
Hotaru nodded. “Yeah. That sounds like a good idea.”
Jing gave her another smile before the two of them got to work. Luckily, with Hotaru’s powers back in control, it didn’t take them long to clean up all the debris. Soon enough, the two of them were seated in the living room, watching the news.
“This meatloaf isn’t too bad,” Jing said as he ate another bite of the mushy brown meat.
“It’s better than public school lunches, that’s for sure,” Hotaru said with a laugh. Jing laughed along with her, and there was a moment of silence before Hotaru spoke again.
“Jing, I really am sorry…about earlier. Not just for dinner, but…for letting my powers get out of control. I thought I was getting the hang of them, but…maybe I need a bit more practice.”
“Don’t worry love, you’ll get it someday,” Jing said. “And hey, as far as powers go, I don’t think anybody ever truly masters them. Even Facilier’s magic powers have been known to erupt whenever he gets angry sometimes.”
Hotaru gave a little nod. Jing did have a point. Facilier’s temper was kind of legendary around here, and nobody wanted to piss him off for fear of what magic spell would come out in response.
“Thanks, Jing,” she said, smiling a little.
Jing smiled back. “No problem.” He gave Hotaru a kiss on the forehead before they drew their attention back to the TV screen.
((Yeah, I've had this idea in my head for a while, so I decided to make a fanfic out of it. XD Happy birthday Toby! You've always been a good friend to me. You're funny, creative, and so nice. I hope you have a wonderful birthday. ))
