Odette couldn’t help but feel excited. The day had finally arrived. She and Facilier were going to get married, after all these years. It was still a little while before the ceremony, but she was still feeling giddy. Facilier was making sure the Main Performance Tent was set up perfectly. She knew he wanted to make sure this day was perfect. At the moment, she was in a private tent, getting a moment to herself. She had been surrounded by make-up artists and bridesmaids all day, it was nice to just take a breather before things started getting underway. She was giving her hair another brush when somebody entered the tent.
“Oh, Maleana, hello,” Odette said, turning around to face her daughter with a smile. She was glad that things were better between them now. It had taken a long time, but now, they were finally close like they used to be. And now, Maleana could be a part of this joyful day.
“Mom, can I talk to you for a second?” Maleana asked. “Away from everybody?”
Odette’s brow furrowed in worry. Maleana’s voice sounded anxious. Was something wrong? “Of course, honey,” she said, standing up.
Maleana just nodded and led her mother out of the tent and into the nearby woods. The circus soon became distant, until Odette couldn’t hear all hustle and bustle. Odette started getting confused. They were awfully far away from the circus. Was this really necessary?
“Maleana, darling, I think we’re far away enough from everybody,” she said. “Can you tell me what’s bothering you?”
Maleana suddenly came to a halt. Odette blinked. Maleana seemed...rigid, like a statue. It gave Odette a bad feeling in her stomach.
“Oh yes, something’s bother me alright,” Maleana said, her voice turning cold. “What’s bothering me is that you’re in the way.”
She suddenly spun around. Odette gasped. Maleana’s eyes were red, and they were filled with blood-lust. Before Odette could react, Maleana shot out her hand and dark magic shot out. It struck Odette in the chest, and within a second, a magical forcefield had surrounded her. No matter what she did, she couldn’t escape.
Maleana laughed. “Much better.”
“Maleana, what are you doing?” Odette cried. “This isn’t like you!”
Maleana just laughed. “Of course it’s not. I haven’t really been me for a long time.”
“What...what do you mean?” Odette asked, fighting to keep her voice from trembling.
“Oh, you’ll find out eventually,” Maleana said. Her body glowed white for a second, and Odette watched in horror as her daughter turned into an exact replica of herself, right down to every blonde strand of hair. “I’m sure someone will fill you in, once I kill Facilier.” She gave one final laugh as she walked away, ignoring Odette’s cries.

Esmeralda felt like this was the busiest day of her life. Her father wanted everything just so, to make Odette happy. Esmeralda knew he was nervous something would go wrong. Hotaru and Jing’s wedding getting crashed by Strato-Form Industries had made people a little spooked about having weddings on circus grounds. But Esmeralda had a good feeling about this day. She was sure it would be fine. Besides, they had lots of people helping. Captain America and Alpha-7 had volunteered to act as security, just to put Facilier at ease. Madeline was in charge of concessions. And there were more than a few circus members helping with decorating.
“Hey Esme, I think we need more pine needles,” Aladdin said. “Think you could get a couple from the woods?”
“No problem,” Esmeralda said. She hurried out of the tent. But she had only gone a little distance aways before sue ran into somebody. That somebody turned out to be Odette.
“Oh, Odette, hi!” Esmeralda said. “Sorry about that. Is everything okay?”
“Everything’s fine, don’t worry,” Odette said, giving a smile. “I just need to...speak to your father. Is he in there?”
Esmeralda blinked. Odette seemed a little...nervous. Then again, that was to be expected. Everyone got wedding jitters. “Yup. He’s still helping set things up, Are you sure you’re okay? You know the old saying. It’s bad luck for the groom to see the bride before the wedding.”
“Everything’s fine,” Odette snapped. “Don’t pester me.” And with that, she walked towards the Main Performance Tent.
Esmeralda gave Odette a look. What was up with her? It was one thing to be nervous, it was another thing to be completely rude. Oh well. She would worry about it later. She had to find some pine needles. She hurried out of the circus grounds and into the woods. But as she walked along the forest path, she felt...weird. Like, something wasn’t right. And she soon found out what that something was when she heard yelling and shouting.
“What the...” Esmeralda stopped for a moment, trying to hear better.
“Help! Is anyone there? Help!”
Esmeralda ran, trying to follow the voice. She didn’t know who it belonged to, but she was never one to ignore a cry for help. The voice was getting closer and closer, and when Esmeralda pushed her way through a row of hedges, she was shocked to see who it was.
“Odette!?” She rubbed her eyes. It couldn’t be true. But it was. Odeette was right in front of her, trapped in a force field.
“Esmeralda!” Oh, thank God it’s you,” Odette said. “You have to get me out of here!”
“But...how did you get here?” Esmeralda asked. “I just talked with you back at the circus. You wanted to speak to my father.”
“Esmeralda, that wasn’t me,” Odette said urgently. “That was Maleana.”
“Maleana?” Now Esmeralda was really confused. “Why would she-”
“I don’t know,” Odette replied. “But the important thing is that Maleana is using her magic to look like me. And she’s going to kill Facilier!”
Esmeralda’s heart froze. Her brain was trying to process all this. Why would Maleana be doing this? She loved Facilier. No, she couldn’t wonder about that now. She and Odette had to stop Maleana. They would figure out why she was doing this later.
“Okay, stand back. This may get messy,” Esmeralda said. She cracked her knuckles before placing her palm on the forcefield. It was strong alright, and it seemed to be demon magic. Esmeralda concentrated as white magic glowed from her palm. She pushed and pushed, trying to break through. “Come on, come on,” she muttered. She struggled for a moment longer, until the forcefield seemed to shudder. Then, it shattered into a million pieces, like a window that had been broken.
“Thanks,” Odette said. “Now let’s get back to the circus, fast.”
Esmeralda nodded, and she and Odette ran off as fast as they could. She just hoped they wouldn’t be too late.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Facilier?”
The ringmaster turned around. He would know that voice anywhere, although he was surprised to see its owner here.
“Odette?” He hurried over to her. “What’s wrong? Are you okay? You know it’s bad luck for the groom to see the bride before the wedding.”
Odette laughed. “Esme said the same thing. Don’t worry, everything’s fine. I just...wanted to ask you something.”
“Oh. Well, what is it?” Facilier asked.
“Well, um...” Odette seemed to stall for a moment, but what nobody saw, was that her hand was glowing with demon magic. With just the right hit, she could take out Facilier in a single blow. She just had to wait for the right moment. “I just...wanted to ask...”
“Dad!”
Facilier spun his head. He saw Esmeralda run into the tent. And beside her, to his great astonishment, was Odette.
“What the...who the...wait...what...” All Facilier could do was stutter as he looked back and forth between the Odette beside him and the Odette between his daughter. Everyone else in the room soon noticed what was going on, and they were equally shocked.
“Esme, what’s going on?” Belle asked, giving her friend a concerned look.
“Dad, that’s not Odette,” Esmeralda said. “That’s Maleana in disguise.”
“What?” Facilier looked at the Odette beside him. But he gasped when he saw that she was no longer looking pretty and docile. Her teeth were gritted, and her eyes were red.
“Ugh, why couldn’t things just go my way?” the fake Odette yelled. Magic burst out of her, sending everybody flying backwards. By the time they got back to their feet, Maleana was standing where the fake Odette stood. And demon magic was curling around her body.
“Maleana, why are you doing this?” Esmeralda asked.
“Oh come on, isn’t it obvious?” Maleana asked, her tone harsh. “Didn’t you wonder why I was suddenly so agreeable after I came back from living on my own? Didn’t you wonder why my dark powers have been getting funky lately? Didn’t you wonder why I look so much like Facilier’s dead wife?”
Silence hung in the air. Nobody dared say a word, for fear of triggering another attack.
“Well, I’ll tell you why,” Maleana snarled. “It was all thanks to Thrax.”
“What?” Facilier couldn’t help but cry.
“Yes, that’s right,” Maleana said with an evil grin. “I ran into dear old Thrax when he visited the circus all those years ago. He decided to place some demon magic in me, so I could kill you in case he couldn’t. He even made me look like your dead wife to mess with your head!” She gave a crazed laugh. “And I don’t care if things aren’t going according to plan. I’ll still kill you, right here, right now!”
She let out another blast of demon magic. Esmeralda acted fast, using her own magic to deflect it. She could see some of the other circus members preparing to attack. “Wait, stop,” she said, holding up a hand. “Maleana’s still in there. I know it. We need to get rid of the demon magic surrounding her. Once we do that, she should be back to her old self.”
“You’re right,” said Facilier. “Guys, let me and Esme try. If something goes wrong...just do what you think is best.” He didn’t turn around to see the circus members’ reactions. He and Esmeralda rushed into battle. magic already making their hands glow.
Maleana just gave that crazy laugh again as she moved into meet them. Even though it was two against one, she was a formidable opponent. She warded off Facilier and Esmeralda’s attacks as if they were nothing. The three of them went back and forth, trying to gain an edge. They soon broke apart, all of them breathing heavily.
“Dad, we need a different strategy,” Esmeralda said. “This is getting us no where.”
“Agreed,” Facilier said. “I think I’ve got an idea. Just stay on the sidelines for moment. When the time comes, you’ll know what to do.”
“Wait, what?” Esmeralda asked.
But Facilier had no time to reply. He sent a blast of fire in Maleana’s direction and rushed in to fight her again.
“Come on, fire blasts? Is that the best you got, old man?” Maleana taunted.
Facilier didn’t answer. He and Maleana exchanged blows, while Esmeralda wondered what the heck she was supposed to be doing. Suddenly, it came to her. The point of this wasn’t to land blows on Maleana. The point of this was to get rid of the demon magic inside her. She knew what she had to do. Her hands glowed with white magic as she waited for the right moment.
Facilier and Maleana kept going back and forth, attacking and dodging and blocking as they tried to take each other out. Suddenly, Maleana gave a cry of rage as she aimed her fist towards Facilier’s face. The ringmaster danced out of the way as Maleana’s fist went forward and collided with the ground instead. Esmeralda saw her opening. She jumped in and blasted Maleana with her light magic.
Maleana gave an unholy scream that made almost everybody cover their ears. If there was one thing demons hated, it was light magic. She collapsed to the ground, breathing heavily. Facilier walked over before putting his palm forward. Maleana froze, her body in Facilier’s magical grip.
“Your work is done here, Thrax,” Facilier said, his voice quiet, but deadly. “This is the last time you hurt anyone dear to me.”
His hand curled into a fist. Maleana screamed as black smoke seemed to leave her body. The demon magic was practically squeezed out of her before it vanished into thin air, where it wouldn’t be able to hurt anyone ever again. Maleana’s body started to glow, until there was an explosion of light. Everyone was blinded for a moment until the light finally died down.
Odette rushed over, fear gripping her heart. Was Maleana alright? Was she okay? By the time she got to Facilier and Esmeralda, Maleana was waking up. Odette gasped. Maleana no longer looked liked Sara. The blonde hair and blue eyes she had had when she was younger had returned.
“Maleana?” Odette asked, her voice soft.
Maleana groaned for a moment before opening her eyes. “What...what happened?”
“Oh, Maleana!” Odette threw her arms around her daughter. She was so glad that she was alright.
“So...is she okay?” Esmeralda asked her father.
Facilier nodded. “Thrax’s demon magic is gone now. You can see that in her appearance. That magic made her look like Sara. But now that it’s gone, she looks like herself now.”
“Huh?” Maleana seemed confused, until she saw the blonde hair rippling down her shoulders. She gasped. “Whoa...” She looked up at her mother, Esmeralda, and Facilier. “Guys, I’m...I’m so sorry. I didn’t know...”
“It wasn’t your fault,” Facilier said, giving her a kind smile. “Thrax’s magic could have overcome anybody. But you’re okay now.”
Maleana nodded before looking up at her mother. “Mom? Is the wedding...is the wedding ruined? Will it still go on?”
Odette laughed. “Of course it will, darling,” she said, kissing her forehead. “Everyone might need some extra time to decorate, but the wedding will still go on.”
“Don’t worry, we’ll take care of it,” Esmeralada said reassuringly. She looked at the other circus members. “Come on guys, let’s get to it!”
That was enough to get everyone moving again. The events of today had been strange indeed, but that was kind of normal for the circus. Everyone was soon decorating again and clearing any debris from the fight. Odette left with her daughter to go back to her private tent. After everything that had happened, they just wanted to spend a little time together. And they felt like that wasn’t too much to ask.
((Okay, just a few notes here. Sorry this took forever to get up. Things kept happening and it kept getting delayed. I just wanted to get it out there, so sorry if it seems a bit rushed. Raven will make a video showing the wedding ceremony itself, as well as Maleana's new face, so keep an eye out for that.))
“Oh, Maleana, hello,” Odette said, turning around to face her daughter with a smile. She was glad that things were better between them now. It had taken a long time, but now, they were finally close like they used to be. And now, Maleana could be a part of this joyful day.
