Facilier had to have confidence in this plan. He had faced a whole lot of bad guys since he had formed the circus. Besides, this time, he wasn't alone. Esmeralda was helping him out this time, along with Mozenrath, Belle, Temperance, Jak, and Alpha-7. Quasimodo had been absolutely beside himself since Cinderella had been kidnapped by the Sins, and Facilier was afraid that he might lose it and try to do his own thing, which would prove disastrous for everybody. So, he had instructed Merlin and Justin to keep an eye on him, and make sure he didn't do anything stupid.
"So, how exactly is this going to work, Dad?" Esmeralda asked. "Do you and I do that demon-killing spell that we used on Thrax?"
"Not exactly," Facilier replied. "I thought about doing that, but Merlin came up with a better plan." He reached into his pocket and pulled out a simple silver dagger.
Mozenrath raised an eyebrow. "Really? We're going after the Seven Deadly Sins, one of the most powerful groups of demons in the world, with a dagger?"
"This isn't an ordinary dagger, Mozenrath," Facilier said, giving him a look. "Merlin's put a special spell on it. Once I stab old Envy with this, it'll send him straight back to Hell. And since he's the leader of the group, once he's gone, the other Sins will follow suit."
"So...what's our job?" Belle asked as she ran a hand through her hair.
"Your job is to keep the other Sins busy while I go after Envy," Facilier replied. "They'll be tough, but all of you guys are good fighters. And with the special spell I put on everybody, we should be safe from their powers. They'll probably be expecting that though, so be prepared to see them fight with other weapons. If you play your cards right, you should be able to keep them distracted while I take care of Envy."
"Good," Temperance replied. "Wrath needs some payback for making me go crazy."
"Looks like we're all set," Alpha-7 said as she glanced at the rest of the group. "Let's do this thing."
Facilier nodded, although he couldn't fight the urge to take a deep breath before he and the others walked into the woods.
It was quiet in there, very quiet. Obviously, the animals had sensed the show-down that would take place here, and had taken cover. Facilier and everybody else was on the alert, looking for any signs of the Sins. The last thing they wanted was to be taken by surprise.
Jak spotted them first. "Facilier, I see them! They're beyond that row of hedges!"
He pointed to a clumping of bushes not too far away. Sure enough, Facilier could dimly spot the Sins, as well as Cinderella, who was tied to a tree. No doubt they had wanted to keep her restrained so she didn't mess up anymore of their plans. Hopefully, by the time this was over, she would be free of them forever. Facilier motioned for the group to follow him, and they walked through the row of bushes to face the Sins. They didn't look too surprised to see them.
"Ah, Facilier, you've finally made it," Envy said. "I was wondering when you would show."
"Last chance, Envy," Facilier said as he cracked his knuckles. "You can go back to Hell quietly, or we'll make you go there."
"Facilier, dont worry about me!" Cinderella cried. "Just take the circus and go!"
"Oh Cindy, surely you wouldn't want to miss out on a fight like this," Envy said with a grin. "This is what I've been waiting for for over twenty years. And once I'm finished with you and your posse, Odette's next. And Quasimodo. Hell, I think I'll take out the whole circus while I'm at it."
Facilier's eyes turned steely. "Oh buddy, if there's one thing you don't mess with, it's my circus." Suddenly, his hands became alight with bright red flames as he yelled "Attack!"
The two sides instantly clashed with one another, as every member took on a Sin to fight. Alpha-7 and Sloth were soon going head to head, with Sloth whipping out knives wickedly fast. But Alpha-7 was faster, and stayed on her toes as Sloth went after her again and again. And any knife she couldn't dodge, she used her robotic arm to block. Knives weren't very good against technology like that, after all.
Temperance had soon targeted Wrath, and in less than a second, she had changed into a horse and was trying to rum him down. But Wrath wasn't just good at making people feel angry. He was quick too, and managed to dodge any attack Temperance threw at him.
Esmeralda clashed against Greed first, and the two of them were soon exchanging blows. Greed's cane wasn't just for show. With a simple switch, a blade popped up, and she was soon swinging it at Esmeralda every chance she got. Luckily, Esmeralda had a vast knowledge of spells on her side, and was able to deflect Greed's blows with rock walls, a shield of ice, whatever came to mind.
Gluttony had whipped his infamous shotgun out in less than a second, and was firing like crazy. But, before he could hit anybody, he had to duck and cover as one arrow after another came his way. He quickly ducked behind a rock to see that it was Belle who was firing at him, and she already had another arrow knocked. He aimed and fired, but she managed to hide behind a tree just in time. Arrows and bullets were fired between the two, but neither ever made its mark.
Pride thought that Jak would be an easy target. But when he saw the guy start channeling eco magic, he realized that he had underestimated the guy. And he wondered if his staff would be enough. But what he lacked for in firing power, he made with in speed. Jak started firing white beams of magic right and left, but Pride either dodged them or blocked them with his staff. The two were pretty much even.
Mozenrath himself locked eyes with Lust. And soon as he did, boy did he get mad. Lust just raised an eyebrow at him.
“You seem familiar,” she said. “Have I seen you before?”
“I was a host for Tykki,” Mozenrath replied curtly.
“Oh yeah,” Lust said, suddenly remembering. “So you’re the sorcerer he latched onto. Sounds like fun.”
“Oh really? ‘Cause what’s not fun is you demons kill people!” Mozenrath let dark magic curl around his hands, fury burning in his eyes. Rue’s death had made him hate demons a lot, so much that it felt like a fire was eating him from the inside out. But here, he had a chance to get a little bit of revenge. And Lust was his prime target. In less than a second, he launched himself at her, his full magic power behind him. Lust kept her cool and dodged his attacks, but even she wondered if she would be able to fend him off. Mozenrath was fighting like a mad man.
Facilier and Envy were soon head to head, just like they were all those years ago. Facilier kind of wished he had Odette by his side. But he didn’t want to risk her life, in case things ended up going badly. It would be a stupid idea, to put himself and Odette, Envy’s prime targets, in the same place. Envy attacked this way and that, using whatever demon magic he had. Facilier fought him off with his own magic, and waited for the right moment to strike.
Temperance’s perseverance finally paid off. She managed to corner Wrath between a couple of trees. Wrath looked around frantically, but realized that he had nowhere left to run. He glared at Temperance before red smoke started to curl around his arms. He made Temperance angry before, he could do it again. But, to his great surprise, it didn’t work. Temperance made no change in her demeanor. With a fierce neigh, she reared up on her hind legs, and kicked Wrath right in the head. A blow like that might have killed a normal man. But since Wrath was a demon, and a Seven Deadly Sin to boot, it just stunned him. Temperance shifted back to her human form and gave a smile.
“Sorry, buddy. Your little trick isn’t going to work on us, not when we’re protected by Facilier’s magic.” Temperance knew she didn’t have long to celebrate, however. Wrath would be up on his feet in a minute. She quickly ran over to where Cinderella was tied to a tree and started working on unraveling the knots.
“You guys shouldn’t have come,” Cinderella said. “I’m not worth the destruction of the circus.”
“You’re practically a member of the circus now, Cindy,” Temperance replied. “You’re one of us, and we never abandon our own.”
Temperance pulled on a strand of the rope, unraveling the knot. Cinderella stepped away from the tree and rubbed her wrists, which were a bit sore.
“You’d better get out of here while you still can,” Temperance said. “Get somewhere safe.”
“But…” Cinderella hesitated. She didn’t want to abandon the circus members, not when they had done so much for her.
“Hey!”
Temperance and Cinderella spun their heads. Wrath was back on his feet again, and he looked pretty pissed off.
“I’m not finished with you yet, horse girl!” he yelled, pointing an angry finger at Temperance.
“Get going, Cindy!” Temperance ordered. “Now!” She shifted back to her horse form, and she was soon going at it with Wrath once again.
Cinderella anxiously wrung her hands, not sure what to do. She wanted to help, but she didn’t want to get in the way. Could she help somehow? She wasn’t a fighter. Maybe she should get some help? But before she could even move, she heard a cry. She spun around to see Envy standing over Facilier, who was on the ground. Blood was running down his arm, and a silver dagger lay on the ground not too far away.
Envy laughed. “Sorry Facilier, but your little plan isn’t going to fool me,” he said. He smiled as he said it, but it sounded more like a snarl. “And now, it’s time for you to die.”
Facilier struggled to get to his feet as Envy’s hands glowed with demon magic. All it would take was one powerful hit, and Facilier would be gone. And he could finally have the revenge he had wanted for so long. But before he could do it, there was a sudden squishing sound. He froze, and he gave a surprised gasp. His magic died down, and Facilier soon saw why.
It was Cinderella. She had grabbed the dagger and had driven it into Envy’s back as hard as she could. Even know, she pushed it in a little further, her face set into an angry mask.
“I’m not going to let you hurt anyone anymore,” she said in a quiet, but deadly, voice.
Envy didn’t say a word as Cinderella pulled the dagger out of his back. He almost looked like a statue, the way he was frozen there. But then, like a toy that had been taken apart, he crumpled to the ground. A change seemed to come over the other Sins. They all stopped and looked with horror at Envy.
Then, in less than a second, their leader disappeared into a green puff of smoke. The other Sins froze, almost like they had been stabbed in the back themselves. They soon went out the same way. They all disappeared in varying colors of smoke. There was a moment of silence. Nobody dared move, as if the slightest sound would bring the Sins back.
Jak broke the silence first when he asked “Are they gone?”
Facilier nodded. “Yup. They’ve been sent back to Hell.” He managed to get to his feet, his hand covering his bloody injury.
“Dad!” Esmeralda ran to her father’s side, looking frantic.
“It’s okay honey, I’m fine,” Facilier said with a little smile. “You can thank Cinderella. She saved my sorry butt.”
“Oh, it was…nothing,” Cinderella said, tripping over her words slightly. Talking was a little difficult right now. The Sins were gone. The people that had told her she was useless, a nothing, worthless, were gone. And it made her so happy, like she was high or something.
“We’d better head back,” Belle said. “Everyone at the circus is probably worried sick.” She gave a little grin to Cinderella. “And I know a certain lion shifter who would love to see you.”
Merlin and Justin sighed. Quasimodo had been pacing for almost an hour, and he was looking more and more edgy by the second. They were on the very edge of the circus grounds, with the forest not too far away. It was the closest they would let Quasimodo get.
“Quasimodo, I really think you should sit down,” said Merlin.
“How can I sit down? How can I be calm? How can I do anything right now?” Quasimodo snapped. “Facilier, Esmeralda, Belle, and all the others are out there rescuing my girlfriend right now. I should be with them.”
“Quasi, relax,” Justin said. “Facilier’s handled stuff like this before. He’ll get her back.”
Quasimodo was about to argue, when he saw some forms emerging from the forest. It took him a moment to see that it was everybody from the rescue mission. Plus one. His worried face melted away and was replaced with joy. Cinderella was there, walking between Esmeralda and Belle, with a big smile on her face. She was feeling the same joy as he was.
“Cindy!” Quasimodo ran forward, not caring if he looked like a fool. By the time he threw his arms around Cinderella, both of them were laughing.
“I thought I’d never see you again. I thought you’d be away forever,” Quasimodo said.
“I thought the same thing,” Cinderella said truthfully. “But it looks like you guys had other thoughts.” She gave a smile at the rescue mission before saying “Thank you. Really. I…don’t know what to say.”
“Well, how about you join the circus, on a permanent basis?” Esmeralda asked. “Quasi here says you’re a pretty good cook. We could always use some help in the kitchen.”
“That’s right,” Facilier added.
Cinderella’s face lit up. This was almost too good to be true. Not only would she be able to be with Quasimodo, she would be able to stay at the circus. And be a cook too! She didn’t care if this place wasn’t a five-star restaurant. If she could other people glad with the food she made, then she would be happy with that.
“I’d love to,” she said, her throat nearly closing up with how much happiness she was feeling.
“Great,” Facilier said, smiling in return. “Now let’s head into the circus. I believe my fiancé is waiting up for me.”
The rest of the group laughed as they started to walk again. Cinderella and Quasimodo didn’t say much, but they held each other’s hands the whole way there. They were just happy to be near each other again. Their future was now bright.
"So, how exactly is this going to work, Dad?" Esmeralda asked. "Do you and I do that demon-killing spell that we used on Thrax?"
